Matt is a thoughtful person. He is not selfish nor greedy. He wasn't lazy so he didn't just say thank you. If mean Ben was helped by the Indians, he would have might just ran away or even hurt/steal something from the Indians.

I can infer that Matt is a very kind and generous person. Saknis helped him recover from the bee stings, brought him food, and gave him beautiful moccasins. So you can see that Mat is a kid person. A person such as Ben would not even say thank you.

I think Matt is noble, thoughtful, and respectful of the way Matt felt when the Indians saved his life, gave him new shoes, and gave him medicine. A horrible, stone-hearted person like Ben would have just been thoughtless and just left a person asking offers of help alone.

From knowing that Matt wants to give something in return, I can infer that Matt is an appreciative, humble, and thoughtful boy. Someone else like Ben would have thought that they could be independent and without them, they would still survive from the harsh stinging. When Matt helped Ben, he didn't say thank you. Instead, he used Matt's supplies and used that kindness as an advantage and stole Matt's rifle. Now, Matt has to rely on fish and berries for food.
